Historian's Report - January 2005
BY Will D. Since the last Court of Honor, Troop 159 has been busy the last 3 months. October activities started with Troop JLT. Ten scouts came and were trained on leadership skills and learned (LBE) - lead by example. The next activity was placing American flags on veteran's graves service activity in November. This is our troop's way of honoring the deceased veterans who served our country. The November camping trip was a backpacking trip to Turkey Pen camping area. It was a two-day trip and the hike into and out of the campsite was about 2 miles. The younger scouts learned some lessons on what "Be Prepared" means. The Veteran's Day Service held at the Simpsonville Veteran's Memorial found Troop 159 scouts participating in the flag raising ceremony. Mr. Colvin, our resident ground pounder, attended this service in full military uniform. In December was the Campout at Brashier Campus. The scouts really worked on advancement with the scouters. A good time was had by all. On December 12th, Locke Bell's Eagle Ceremony was held at the Donaldson Center, the site of his Eagle project. Locke had moved to Charlotte for a while but came back to have his Eagle Court of Honor here. Congratulations Locke! On December 20th the troop participated in Goodfellows Service Project. Scouts and scouters went to box up donated food to be given to those less fortunate. We helped to pack over a thousand boxes that night! In a lonnnnng-awaited event, Brian Carbaugh's Eagle Project finally occurred January 8th at Messiah Lutheran Church. More than 20 scouts and scouters made picnic tables, sealed benches, weeded, spread new sand and mulch, and cleared some low hanging tree branches under the watchful guidance of Brian. Good luck on your Eagle Board, Brian. The next two events occurred at the same time, the High Adventure Winter Trek and the Asbury Hills camping trip. 16 members of the High Adventure Crew hiked 18 miles along the Foothills Trail over three beautiful days to a finish of cream soda and Hardee's burgers. The rest of the troop went to Asbury Hills where they went on a day hike, learned orienteering and flint and steel, and had a cook off. Troop 159 had a fun time with more activity to come. This completes the historian's report.
