Subject: COLVIN - AFTER ACTION REPORT, HA DAY TREK 2 OCT 04
Troop 159,
Pleased to tell you all that we had a really great High Adventure (HA) day trek yesterday at Caesar's Head State Park that you should be sorry you missed if you are HA eligible. The weather was great and we had some good and challenging trails to hike, even though not the ones we initially planned for which were closed due to dangerous conditions caused by all the recent storms. However, David S, Crew Chief, and the Crew quickly researched their map and found another route just as challenging.
All the Crew, even our first timers, all hiked very well and got in a pretty solid 10 mile hike up and down quite a few hills, which had some of the Fossils doing the "huff and puff" on the way up. However, having lunch at Raven Cliff Falls, which was flowing like a mini Niagara Falls from all the rain in the mountains recently, was well worth it for everyone.
Fortunately, the only injuries to report were a few hot spots and blisters on Will J's feet (some good did come out of that, since it gave him his trail name of "Hot Foot"). After applying the necessary first aid to Hot Foot's feet, it became readily apparent that his feet need a new and "bigger' pair of hiking boots. Unfortunately, the blisters were bad enough to force Will, accompanied by his dad, to cut their hike short by a couple of miles by "bee lining" back to the car; however, they still got in a good 8 mile "Walk In The Woods."
I'm also happy to report that several first time trekkers and some of the veterans finally got their Trail Names as follows:
| Scouts | Advisors |
|
Matt S. "No Problem" |
Tim Stewart "Trail Runner" |
|
* Brian is a friend of Mr. Carbaugh who joined us on this trek, and hopes to join us again in the future (he also volunteered for Greg Bajan's Eagle Scout Service Project). He is well versed in medical skills which are always great tools to have along on any HA trek. |
|
Unfortunately, we did not find a Trail Name yet for Mr. Johnson, but then that's something to look forward to on our next trek.
We are hoping to do another HA trek sometime in the next couple of months as part of getting ready for our cold weather winter backpacking trek (15-17 Jan 05). The date for the next trek is still pending, and will be announced at a later date, but if you are HA eligible, then you should have 15-17 Jan 05, already on your calendar for you to be a Crew member.
