Subject: COLVIN - HIGH ADVENTURE SPRING BREAK TREK REPORT

Troop 159,

The High Adventure (HA) 5th Annual Spring Break Trek is now part of Troop/Crew history, and it surely is one for the record. This year our Trek, though shortened due to school snow make up days which decreased our Spring Break trek from 5 to 4 days, was no less intense than our other Spring Break Treks.  The Crew was busy every day from early morning until exhaustion took over each night and we all happily answered the call of those great bunks at Camp Old Indian.  The members of this year's Crew (Co-Crew Chiefed by David J. and Jeremy B.) were:

              Scouts                                               Advisors

              Chris A.                                       Carbaugh, Ron
              Jeremy B.                                    Colvin, David
              Eric C.                                         Hollar, Lee
              Justin C.                                      Hollar, David
              Chris D.                                       Keeton, Calvin
              Will D.                                         Zellmer, Daniel
              Brent H.                                       Warlick, Charlie
              David J.
              Chris K.
              Mac S.
              Ben W.

Our Trek days were filled with HA activities such as 22 caliber rifle, BB Gun, and shotgun skeet shooting, mountain biking, archery, hiking, volleyball, flag football, fishing, and of course at night there was nothing quite like a serious game of capture the flag.   We also practiced our outdoor cooking skills over open fires, and the meals seemed to get better each night as those skills and ideas got better as well.  I know that the Crew Advisors could not have handled too many more nights out there without buying new pants as the meals were just too good and too much, and oh those Dutch oven cakes and brownies every night!
The Advisors also created a new chile recipe now known as "High Adventure Chile (it passed the Scoutmaster's taste test and he really knows his chile - it must have been good as he got all the way to thirds).

The Great Scoutmaster really saved up some great weather for us as we only got a few drops of Scout mist and some great day and night time temperatures to enjoy all our HA activities and three great campfires.
Two of our first time HA Trekkers earned their Crew Trail Names which will be added to the Roster of HA Crew Tail Names.  Chris K. is now known as "Short Step (takes small steps while hiking - but we figure as he grows into his step, his name may one day well be changed to "Long Step'), and Mac S. is now know as "Ghost" (he is so quite you hardly know he is around).

Three Crew members earned Shotgun Merit Badge (many thanks to our Scoutmaster, Mr. Warlick for coming up and teaching the class).  Chris A., Brent H., and Eric C. can now add that Merit Badge to the many others they have earned, and have also learned how best to tenderize those clay pigeons before roasting over an open fire (they are a little tough without tenderizing, but do provide a lot of fiber to the diet).

Crew thanks go to the following for their special support to this HA Trek

        1.  Mr. and Mrs. C. who provided the Crew with six 22 caliber rifles, two shotguns, targets, and roundtrip transportation with their big van and monster trailer for the Crew and Crew gear.  Also, special thanks to Eric "Brave Heart" C. for adapting the family trailer to carry our mountain bikes, and also serving as our Crew Weapons Specialist during the trek.

       2.  Chris "Short Step" K. for serving as the Crew Chaplain to ensure we remembered our "Duty to God - A Scout Is Reverent."

       3.  Advisor/Eagle Scout/Founding HA Crew Member Lee "Needles" Hollar for using his College Spring Break vacation to assist the Crew.

       4.  And last but not least, our Co-Crew Chiefs David "Radar" J. and Jeremy "Trail Mix" B. for doing their best to get the Crew up and running for the Trek.

Besides all the fun and adventure we have in HA, each Crew member is learning what it means to be HA.  It means putting Crew ahead of self, being prepared, doing what has to be done without being asked/pushed simply because it is the right thing to do, taking on responsibilities and being involved in Trek planing, and it also means learning what happens or does not happen when each Crew member doesn't do his best for his Crew.  Our HA goals are to bring out the best in each Scout and provide him with the challenges and memories of great Scouting.  We hope that all the Troop's Scouts who are willing to tackle the tasks and challenges of HA will join a Crew as they become eligible, as it is something you should not want to miss out on.

                                                         High Adventure Builds Scouts,
